Barny – Holes and Hogs

Price: $1200 USD (includes hard foam case) – still available

This body was headed to the garbage or more likely, the fire pit. As you can see by the other builds here, a main focus for me is showcasing the high-end and exotic woods I find. Barny is neither of those, being a multi-piece body of alder. Nothing special and I was tempted to just toss it aside. Then an idea hit me – holes.

Onto the drill press it went where I attacked it with a variety of bits to carve out wood. Kept telling myself I was “adding lightness”.

When the shavings settled, Barny was taking shape. 5 holes across the top of the body and 11 in a row nearer the bottom. From there it was simple, pure creativity. Aluminum tubes into the 11 holes, followed by legit .38 Special shell casings to cap one end. The backside of each tube is capped by individual metal caps in a distressed, aged copper tone.

The five larger holes were smoothed and blended to a degree, then hand wrapped with waxed twine for a nice contrast.

The body and neck were all treated to an aged red paint, further distressed and sanded back to look like…yup, an old barn! To give it a nice sheen, the body was then treated to a oil coat and hand buffed with 0000 steel wool. The finishing touch was a full hand polish with Renaissance Wax to seal it and add a layer of protection.

To keep the theme going, all hardware is aged and copper. It’s a very unique build, unlike anything you’re likely to see elsewhere.

For pickups, a set of my favorite Hogs from Revel Custom Pickups were dropped in to give Barny a mean, mean LeRoy Brown kinda vibe. For them, they say this about the Hogs…

The hog is all about big, fat, tones. These are T-Style pickups with the output of a P90. Fat, warm bass, thick mids, and a clear top end.

These are built with .250″ Alnico V magnets, 43 awg wire, & are awesome T-Style pickups if you’re looking for something different in your (guitar) but something that can still twang.

If you hit the link above to the Revel site, you’ll actually see Barny being played to demo the pickups. These Hogs rock!
